Another Person to Celebrate

Sunday, January 21st, 2018

After speaking at the Willows Golf and Country Club in Saskatoon yesterday, I wanted to send a shout out to Matthew who carried my heavy stuff from my car! Katrina was awesome. Both so helpful throughout the day helping me to get set up.

As I was leaving Katrina surprised me and tucked a small box of food for me to snack on while I traveled back to Regina. I didn’t discover it until I loaded my bag into the car and it truly made me smile. Way to go Katrina. Thank you for your small act of kindness.

Celebrating Great Service

Saturday, January 20th, 2018

In the theme of celebrating, I want to celebrate the great people I meet on the road. I was having lunch Moose Jaw at the Moose Jaw spa and the service from Stephanie was outstanding. I wanted to celebrate Amanda. Amanda is one of the managers at Temple Garden Mineral Spa and every time she passed you in the hallway or passed by my lunch table she smiled or said, “Hi.” When I speak on Customer Service, I stress how important it is that EVERYONE in the building make their guests feel welcome. That simple act of making eye contact and saying hi does make people feel special. I know Amanda is a “people person” so it comes easy for her to do that. If you are not a people person and you serve the public, you have to do one of two things: learn how to become a people person or please get a new job that does not require you to pretend.

Colliers Saskatchewan

Friday, January 19th, 2018

Thank you Colliers Saskatchewan for an incredible afternoon yesterday. What a warm and inviting group of people! One of the many things Colliers does that impresses me is the number of times a year they bring their staff together and celebrate them. I know companies are “busy” but people need to be treated and celebrated to feel valued. Collier values Service, Expertise, Community and Fun! Nice to see a company that truly lives their values.

Crop Production Services

Wednesday, January 17th, 2018

I am off to Moose Jaw today to speak to Crop Production Services! I love speaking this time of year and giving everyone a kick start for the New Year. For all of you supporting Farmers and Producers and to all of you growing our food … thank you.

A farmer once told me that one the things he loves the most about farming is every year God freezes the land, kills the bugs and lets him start over again. Great attitude! Here’s to a great start for 2018!

Happy Turquoise Tuesday!

Tuesday, January 16th, 2018

In response to the 10% Blue Monday yesterday, I wanted to respond in a 90% way and call today Turquoise Tuesday. I was surprised how many people yesterday responded to my question of, “How are you?” With a, “Well you know, ‘blue’.” I am all about letting people feel what they feel but let’s change that today. Turquoise is my favourite color in my work and my home. It is a happy color. It reminds me of the ocean.

So today lets change our color of blue and focus on what is great in our lives. We live in the greatest country in the world, you have a computer to read this message on, a job, a family, OUR HEALTH! When people ask you how you are today, how about we say, “Great.”

In the spirit of celebrating today, here is an update about my good friend Mel. He thinks all days are turquoise.

We are happy to share an update on our amazing Dad. This week is one year since Dad was given about 3 months to live. His health has changed but some things stay the same.

Dad loves his daily chats with his kids. He lives for his frequent video chats with his grandkids to see who their personalities are developing them into. He prioritizes what he can do with the energy he has each day. His first priority is always to offer support, encouragement and praise to the ones he loves. He isn’t focused on how much time he has but how to make the most of each day.

According to Mel — love big, laugh often and never hesitate to give someone a hug.

Attitude Booster – January 2018

Rather than a New Year’s Resolution I like to create a theme for the year, and this year my theme is CELEBRATE! I have had many years of themes that were about improving, and this year I am ready to celebrate all of my hard work paying off! Last year my theme was “Letting Go” and I had to let a lot go. Now I am ready to celebrate.

Celebrate your job/company. I will celebrate my 25th year speaking this year! Wow. It is rare these days to meet a group of staff that are not totally overwhelmed by the amount of rapid changes taking place in their companies. I think it is time to take a break from change and celebrate what is good in our businesses. What are your successes as a company? What are your strengths? Rather than constantly changing, let’s celebrate what is good. Host monthly 90% meetings where people come together and talk about what is great.

Celebrate your coworkers and clients. It’s time to celebrate the great people we get to work with. The 10% people take up so much of our time and energy. I am simply tired of dealing with the 10% people. I have tried to love them, care for them and change them but I have learned that negative people are like addicts, they have to want to make the change for themselves; unfortunately, most of the 10% that I meet never do. For 2018, let’s stop giving the 10% people our energy and letting them rent space in our heads. They win when we do that, and I am tired of them winning. It’s time to celebrate the great people.

Celebrate your friends. I have spent years building a circle of absolutely wonderful friends. I have many friends on Facebook but I have a tight circle of wonderful people in my everyday life, too. I celebrate my friends who are 90% people and who strive to live their lives fully. I have had to let a lot of toxic people go, and my life is better as a result.

Celebrate your family. I am celebrating a wonderful time in my life. I’ve shared 25 years with Darren and am watching our teenagers grow up to be incredible young adults. I am celebrating this season of my life. Our family has been through a lot over the years—it is time to celebrate how far we have come.

Celebrate yourself. Celebrate you and your 90%s—your strengths, your accomplishments and all that makes you great. Then pick one 10% thing that you need to work on and spend this year working on that. Make your theme this year what you need to do the most; Heal, Nourish, Cope, Grow, Let Go or Simplify. Spend all year applying your theme to your life.

Happy New Year!

Amazing Analogy

Friday, January 5th, 2018

Thank you so much to my amazing cousin Jonell for this:

This made me think of you

I love this analogy!!! ❤️ from a friend ☕️:

You are holding a cup of coffee when someone comes along and bumps into you 🤦🏼‍♀️or shakes your arm, making you spill your coffee everywhere.

Why did you spill the coffee? 🤔

“Well because someone bumped into me, of course!”🤷🏼‍♀️

Wrong answer.

You spilled the coffee because there was coffee in your cup.

Had there been tea in the cup, you would have spilled tea.

*Whatever is inside the cup, is what will spill out.*

Therefore, when life comes along and shakes you (which WILL happen), whatever is inside you will come out. It’s easy to fake it, until you get rattled.
*So we have to ask ourselves… “what’s in my cup?”

When life gets tough, what spills over?

Joy, gratefulness, peace and humility?💓

Or anger, bitterness, harsh words and reactions? 💣

You choose! 💯

Today let’s work towards filling our cups with gratitude, forgiveness, joy, words of affirmation; and kindness, gentleness and love for others.🙌🏻🙏🏻🙌

Happy New Year!

Tuesday, January 2nd, 2018

A young audience member shared her New Year’s resolution and it was to be kind to others. She thought it was important to be nice to people but it is more important to be kind to them. I like to create a theme for the year (rather than a New Year’s resolution). Two years ago my theme was “kindness”. ( I am still working on this year’s, stay tuned!)

Within our businesses and roles at work: I love the words “don’t worry” and I use them a lot. When a client doesn’t get back to me in time, when I wait too long for a supplier to delivery my materials and they respond with an empathetic sorry, I always say “don’t worry”. I like those words they cut people some slack.

With staff and coworkers: I love the quote, “Be nicer than necessary to everyone you meet. Everyone is fighting some kind of battle.” I can’t tell you how many times employees will point out to me “the annoying one” or “the weird one” in their workplaces. Just be kind. Sometimes we have no idea of their story. My grama said, “If you have nothing nice to say, don’t say anything at all.”

Strangers: In one week in two separate presentations, I had an audience member share with me that when they are having a bad day one of the best ways for them to feel better is when someone does something kind for them. A small gesture – paying for someone’s coffee in the drive through, leaving money in the shopping cart or letting a car in while driving.

Your family: When I travel, I like to leave lists for my family to get done while I am away. I can get really focused on those lists being done. I have been guilty of sitting in airports texting the lists again to be sure everyone is caught up. That is not a kind way to say hi to my family. Now I just text and say hi, I love them and appreciate them. Then I pray for the lists to be done. J

Yourself: Be kind to you. Take care of yourself. Drink your water, eat your veggies, exercise and get your sleep. If you are not kind to you first, you cannot be kind to anyone else.

Let’s look for more opportunities to be kind in 2018. You just might make someone’s day.

Happy New Year!
