Embracing a 90% Attitude in Serving Others

Serve with a 90% Attitude Darci Lang

In a world where everyone is striving to be the best, it’s easy to forget the importance of serving others. However, adopting a mindset of service can be incredibly rewarding, not just for those you help, but for yourself as well. One powerful way to approach this is by embracing a “90% attitude” in serving others.

What is a 90% Attitude?

A 90% attitude means giving your best effort in serving others. It’s about being present, empathetic, and genuinely caring. Like with any situation, there will always be those 10% times when you may fall short of your goal, but the goal is always to maintain a healthy balance between serving others and taking care of yourself.

How to Serve with a 90% Attitude

  1. Listen Actively: Pay attention to what others are saying without planning your response. This shows that you value their thoughts and feelings. I believe we should spend 90% of our time listening and 10% of our time talking.  My grandpa used to say, "God gave you two ears and one mouth for a reason." :)

  2. Be Present: Focus on the moment and the person you are serving. Avoid distractions and give them your full attention. I imagine a big shepherd stick in front of me, and when I think thoughts of the person in front of me that distracts me, I shepherd those thoughts over. I focus fully on the person who is in front of me. I like to face them as much as possible and love the saying, " Hold space." Holding space for those in front of me is very important, and I want them to be heard.

  3. Show Empathy: Try to understand things from their perspective. Empathy builds trust and strengthens relationships. Seeing others through a 90% lens is the lens of kindness, compassion and understanding. If you find yourself judging or making assumptions, move those thoughts over and just see people with love and understanding.

  4. Offer Help: Look for ways to assist others, even in small ways. Sometimes, the smallest gestures can make the biggest difference. I like to ask the questions, "How can I help? " and "What can I do to support you?"  I look around where I am and ask, "How can I offer some help or kindness to this situation?".

  5. Express Gratitude: Acknowledge and appreciate the efforts of others. Gratitude fosters a positive environment and encourages a culture of service. I can't believe how many employees I meet in the companies that hire me to speak and tell me all they want is a thank you. People need to hear they are good. Some people do not hear good comments anywhere else in their lives! I take this very seriously. Thank people. It changes how people feel.

The Impact of a 90% Attitude

When you serve others with a 90% attitude, you create a ripple effect. Your actions inspire others to adopt a similar mindset, leading to a more supportive and compassionate community. Moreover, serving others can bring a sense of fulfillment and purpose to your own life, enhancing your overall well-being.

By adopting this mindset, you can make a meaningful difference in the lives of others and create a positive impact in your community. So, let’s embrace the 90% attitude and make the world a better place, one act of service at a time.
